IEEE Information Theory Society limits the size of correspondences

WSIL News & Views 6 Comments »

In a recent decision IEEE Information Theory Society has decided to limit the size of correspondence publications in the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory to five pages. I really dont see a merit in this decision, this makes correspondences equivalent to conference publications. A better idea would have been to do away with correspondences altogether and increase the acceptance rate in ISIT.

Latex Header for Multiple Papers / Versions

WSIL News & Views 2 Comments »

Many of our talented students in our group are writing multiple papers at the same time, each has multiple revised versions. This really confuses your adviser. To make his life easier, I propose adding a header similar to the following one in your latex file right before \maketitle:

\markboth{Paper: J100-TCOM, 1001st Revision, \today}{}

J100-TCOM indicates your 100th journal paper, which was submitted to IEEE Trans. Comm.

Hope this helps.

Wearing Suits…Yes or No?

WSIL News & Views 2 Comments »

I suppose I will inaugurate the blog for 2007. Here’s a link to an interesting blog post by Mark Cuban on why he doesn’t wear suits.

Personally I used to really dislike wearing suits, but now I find them to be tolerable. Perhaps we should adopt a compromise solution…dispose of “business formal” attire and only require “business casual” attire.

This reminds me of my experience at Globecom 2004 in Dallas, where I saw one presenter give a talk wearing a hooded sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers.

A New Year’s Post

WSIL News & Views 1 Comment »

I want to wish everyone and their families a happy (and safe) new year.  Let’s make 2007 an even more productive year for the WSIL!  The year 2006 was very kind to our leader (the fearless Robert W. Heath, Jr.) and his students.  2006 saw an awe inspiring three best paper awards at VTC, WPMC, and Globecomm, respectively.  In the Spring, four PhD students graduated (Bishwarup, Antonio, Farooq, and Taiwen) to embark on new careers and spread the wisdom and passion for wireless communications acquired under the mentoring of Professor Heath.  In the Fall, three new students entered (Kien, Tae Hyun, and Rahul) and will no doubt use their creative minds to replenish the grist necessary for advancing the knowledge of wireless communication systems in the WSIL mill.  Let’s keep the wheel turning by continued creative investigation and collaboration with our peers.

About the IEEE intellectual property rights

Recently, I reviewed some manuscripts by request for the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications Journal. Unfortunately, I can’t help but reject the papers because some authors don’t properly cite their previous work. Additionally, they wrote the manuscript using the well-known “cut-and-paste'’ method from their previous work.

Last meeting Prof. Heath discussed plagiarism and self plagiarism in some detail. I think it is essetial that we all have a correct understanding of the IEEE intellectual property rights such as plagiarism and multiple submission.

For more details on the topic, see the following link http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/rights/index.html

Kaibin receives best student paper award

WSIL News & Views 5 Comments »

Ok, I know it seems unbelievable that a hat trick of best student paper awards could actually happen in one year but it did…

Please join me in congratulating Kaibin Huang (special mention to Bishwarup Mondal, former student) for winning the best student paper award in Communication Systems at GLOBECOM in San Francisco for the paper

K. Huang, B. Mondal, R. W. Heath, Jr., and J. G. Andrews, “Multi-Antenna Limited Feedback for Temporally-Correlated Channels: Feedback Compression,'’ accepted to Proc. of IEEE Global Telecommunications Conf., Nov. 27 - Dec. 1, San Francisco, CA, USA.

The award decision was based on (i) paper evaluations and (ii) on the oral presentation. There was a group of judges that made the final decision on oral presentations.

Great job Kaibin! I think there is a cash award that will naturally be spent on a gift for his wife and something for us.

For those of you who have yet to see this, check it out.  I must say, it’s much, much better than the hunter orange site of the past.

Your Mathematics Genealogy

WSIL News & Views No Comments »

As it turns out, the mathematics family tree organized by North Dakota State University includes control, system theory, probability, and information theory. This means you (if you get your Ph.D.) can enter your information. Whether you are aware or not, you are a grandstudent of Arogyaswami Paulraj (Prof. Heath’s Ph.D advisor) and Georgios Giannakis (Prof. Heath’s M.S. advisor). I have been entering some of this data. So far, I have submitted Prof. Heath, Prof. Giannakis, and Prof. Jerry Mendel (Prof. Giannakis’ Ph.D. advisor) and all of Prof. Heath’s students. Unfortunately, this is all of the information I could dig up. In particular, if anyone knows information about Prof. Paulraj’s and Prof. Mendel’s advisor that would be great. Jerry Mendel got his Ph.D. from Polytechnic University in Brooklyn in 1963. Professor Paulraj got his degree from IIT New Delhi in 1973. I do know that Prof. Mendel’s thesis was titled “The Identification of Overdamped Processes in the Time-Domain” and that Prof. Paulraj coauthored a paper with A. Mandal “Fast computation of ambiguity functions” in the Journal of IETE in 1973. I don’t know, however if, in fact, this was his advisor. I tried finding the IETE article, but it did not appear to be listed online. IETE appears to be an Indian oranization, so maybe my Indian colleagues have more on this. If anyone can offer any help, it would be great to see if we can dig deeper!

Congratulations to Robert Daniels who won the Innovative Signal Analysis Award this year. The prize is $5,000 - which looks like a lot of money for coffee and Karaoke to me! Great job!
